Mokena Elementary School

District 159 -- MES Home

The 1st Grade 'Project Respect' program was created last school year as part of the MES School Improvement Plan.  This program focuses on reducing inappropriate teasing and exclusionary behaviors of first grade students.  An emphasis is also placed on understanding and respecting the differences of others.

At the beginning of the school year all 1st grade students watch the Popcorn Park Puppets video titled 'Respect.'  This video lays the foundation for understanding that respect means treating others the way you want to be treated.  After the video, each classroom is given an empty popcorn bucket and a small poster that summarizes 'How To Be Respectful.'  During the course of the school year, teachers were asked to add a popcorn kernel when they saw a student, a small group of students, or their entire class acting with respect.  As you can see, RESPECT is popping up all over MES!
